Purposive Communication is about writing, speaking and presenting to different audiences for various purposes. It is a three-unit course that develops students' communicative competence and enhances their cultural and intercultural awareness through multimodal tasks that provide them opportunities for communicating effectively and appropriately to a multicultural audience in a local or global context.

          This course introduces students to the contemporary world by examining the multifaceted phenomenon of globalization. Using the various disciplines of the social sciences, it examines the economic, political and technological and other transformations that have created an increasing awareness of the interconnectedness of peoples and places around the globe. To this end, the course provides an overview of the various debates in global governance, development, and sustainability. Beyond exposing the student to the world outside the Philippines, it seeks to inculcate a sense of global citizenship and global ethical responsibility.

As mandated by Republic Act 1425, this course covers the life and works of the country's national hero, Dr. Jose P. Rizal. Among the topics covered are Rizal's biography and his writings, particularly the novels Noli Me Tangere and El Filibustirismo, some essays, and various correspondence. Dr. Jose P. Rizal, the greatest Philippine National Hero is also the Father of Asian Nationalism, is splendid genius, the forerunner of nationalism and patriotism. As a hero, he is our icon, a model worth emulating. Thus, it is proper to know him by studying his life and works that brought him to such greatness and honor. The idealism on nationalism and patriotism is every Filipino concern, such that to be good citizen one must live these values for general welfare.
